We’re excited to welcome a Mexican coffee to our roster for the 2nd year in a row! The state of Oaxaca has a history of producing high quality coffees–however, it wasn’t until recently that the producers of these coffees were able to receive distinction.

San Agustin Loxicha is the community of 8 farmers working together to produce this exciting, fruit-forward coffee. The San Agustin farms are located in the Pluma-Hidalgo subregion of Oaxaca, where high elevations(up to 2200 masl) and the singular Pluma coffee variety produce a diverse set of flavors.

Pluma’s coffee production was once largely dominated by large coffee estates that produced lower-elevation, lower quality coffees. Higher-grown coffees were produced by much smaller farmers, whose higher quality coffee was bought out by the larger estates to be blended with their own lower-quality crop. This prevented smallholder producers to receive recognition and fair pay.

Low coffee market prices and coffee leaf rust drove away the large estates, but smallholder farmers continued to produce coffee out of necessity–struggling to sustain and re-invest in their farms. A few years ago, Pluma coffees were introduced to buyers that were willing to pay viable prices, allowing farmers to re-invest in their farms, distinguish their coffee as their own, and work towards economic stability.
